Residents asked to pitch in to clean up Fort Kent graveyard

FORT KENT – The Fort Kent graveyard is in need of some tidying up and resident Caroline Biddle is hoping to encourage people, especially those with loved ones buried there, to lend a hand in keeping it shipshape over the next few months.

Cleanups have been scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month starting at 7:30 p.m. The first one coming up is May 15.

“Anyone who has family buried there, please come and help us clean up their home,” Biddle said. “We need to clean the church yard and the graveyard.”

Volunteers are asked to bring their own equipment – from lawnmowers to rakes and bags.

“I even bought a chainsaw as we had trees growing through the fences.”

Regular masses are no longer held at the Fort Kent church.

Biddle says a group of community members have met with the Diocese of St. Paul regarding their concerns about the upkeep of the graveyard and are waiting to see how it will be addressed but in the meantime the graveyard needs some care on a regular basis through the spring and summer.

“There’s nobody here to do this anymore except us old folks,” Biddle said, adding she is hopeful people will lend a hand and “do it for their loved ones.”
